The Danube Ruralscapes project focuses on the cultural landscapes of regions along the Danube. Its primary goal is to create a professional network whose members, building on local heritage, can ensure the sustainable development of the region. In addition, it aims to develop a new regulatory framework in which urban planning and land-use recommendations applicable at the regional level are formulated based on shared local knowledge and practices.
Our intention is that all this will contribute to making rural settlements more attractive and liveable, strengthening regional identity, improving the quality of rural life, and encouraging future generations to preserve and sustainably develop their heritage-based rural landscapes.
The project is led by the Budapest University of Technology and Economics joined by 12 professional partners from 6 countries including municipalities, universities, and development agencies, with international knowledge exchange being an important component of the whole process. A significant part of the partnership has previously worked together in the DANUrB (2017–2019) and DANUrB+ (2020–2022) Danube Interreg projects, aiming to valorize the cultural heritage of small settlements along the Danube as a unified entity and to give these places new momentum from both tourism and community perspectives.
During Danube Ruralscapes, we are continuing our work along the Danube with new pilot regions and a broadened professional network.
