BIOmappers Project - Mapping Biodiversity in Community Gardens
The BIOmappers project is realised with the support of the Erasmus+ programme in collaboration with three European countries (Austria, Hungary, and Italy). The initiative aims to make the rich biodiversity of community gardens visible through user-friendly digital tools while enhancing the environmental awareness of city dwellers and decision-makers.
During the programme, we engage community gardeners and local residents in participatory mapping of the gardens' flora and fauna using digital applications (such as iNaturalist). Participants not only acquire technical knowledge but also develop a deeper connection with their environment and play an active role in preserving urban biodiversity.
In the community gardens operated by KÉK and those of our partner organisations, we will conduct a total of 24 on-site and 6 online training sessions, and install 24 information boards that will provide access to the digital biodiversity library of each garden through QR codes. This innovative approach transforms the gardens into open educational centres where any community member can engage in discovering biodiversity.
The training materials and videos created as a result of the project will be freely accessible to garden communities and adult education organisations, further supporting the sustainability and wider dissemination of the initiative. In this way, the BIOmappers project contributes to raising awareness of the value of urban biodiversity and recognising the environmental role of community gardens.
