‘CITIES AFTER THE VIRUS - Initiatives and Urban Operations During Pandemics and Crises’ Best Practices Database

In collaboration with KÉK x MEGAKOM Consulting Office x Városkutatás Ltd.:

The situation caused by the pandemic presents new challenges to us all. The consequences of COVID-19 force many sectors to rethink and innovate, which is evident in Hungary as well, igniting an unprecedented, extensive and multifaceted social cooperation. The heroes of recent weeks, alongside healthcare and education workers, were clearly those local communities and businesses that organized assistance, transport, job mediation, and accommodation, showcasing a possibility for a more liveable, responsible, optimistic, and smarter urban life.

For KÉK, MEGAKOM Consulting Office, and Városkutatás Ltd., it is particularly important to gather, understand, and support these processes because we are convinced that they will have quickly perceptible, significant, and long-term impacts on the functioning of cities, their economies, built environments, and residents alike. A fundamental question is how the energy of current initiatives, the openness of the participants, and their willingness to cooperate can be maintained, and how they can become sustainable, economically viable parts of urban operations.

The situation caused by the pandemic presents numerous difficulties in the economy, institutions, and the lives of the population. It is harder to make decisions and plan, which is why best practices that are easily adaptable, as well as typically local initiatives, are especially important, as they promote visibility as well as cooperation.

Recognizing this, KÉK, Városkutatás Ltd., and MEGAKOM Consulting Office joined forces to create an accessible shared platform for gathering and sharing experiences as key players in national urbanism, facilitating the rapid and effective management of challenges and opportunities for cities. We have created an ever-expanding searchable database for collecting both national and international best practices. Our teams will continue to research new initiatives in the future, but naturally, the database is open to others as well: we welcome further suggestions and examples from the residents of our cities and our professional partners alike.

Our “CITIES AFTER THE VIRUS - Initiatives and Urban Operations During Pandemics and Crises” database can be accessed HERE BY CLICKING.

What do we collect in the database?

We are looking for projects or initiatives created by the situation caused by the virus, isolation, or challenges;

Best practices, methodologies that are replicable or extendable;

Domestic and international examples, at local, urban, and comprehensive scales;

We particularly focus on comprehensive, multi-actor collaborations that may involve multiple sectors, as well as actions related to urban development and urban management;

How to use the database?

Found on the tab named “I. COVID19xCITIES collection” is the expanding database, where initiatives and best practices are located (one row equals one best practice). This is already our researchers' published database, which we continue to expand based on incoming examples.

To assist with the overview, we have created various groupings: - Type of organization: according to the type of organizing, initiating organization - Subcategory, label: according to thematic classifications

The table is searchable and filterable, allowing us to quickly narrow down the examples important to us according to the data in row 2.

'II. Articles, Collections' tab is where we place relevant comprehensive and professional articles, as well as various collections and lists.

The table operates online.
