Újbuda Urban Development
The Contemporary Architecture Centre is assisting the Municipality of Újbuda, District XI of Budapest, as a professional partner in planning the district's new Urban Development Concept. The work is being carried out by the Budapest City Planning Design Ltd, with KÉK providing feedback and moderating the process to ensure that Újbuda's interests and urban planning perspectives from both the civil and professional fields are fully integrated in the creation of the new Concept.
ÚJBUDA CULTURAL URBAN DEVELOPMENT
The development of Bartók Béla Street and its surroundings has been a focus of Újbuda Municipality since 2005. This has resulted in the Újbuda Cultural City Centre (KVK) development concept, which has been part of the Integrated Urban Development Strategy (ITS) since 2015. The aim of the KVK programme is to create a cultural main street in the city centre of Újbuda, influencing not only the expanding functions of the district but also its image. It is clearly perceivable to those living, studying, or working here that a new urban area has developed around the central section of Bartók Béla Street. Our research, commissioned by Újbuda Municipality, focuses on the use and function of this district, as well as assessing the organically developing image that can be both consciously shaped and professionally influenced, along with the condition and perception of public spaces. In 2019, KÉK conducted a comprehensive survey of the 'Cultural and Creative Industry Enterprises in Szentimreváros and Lágymányos', which we used as the territorial basis for this current survey as well.
'Cultural and Creative Industry Enterprises in Szentimreváros and Lágymányos' survey territorial definition, 2019.
During the research, we applied qualitative and quantitative methods, resulting in an exploratory and recommendation-based research summary.
In the course of the research, we examined 4 hypotheses across various topics:
A new quarter is being born: The Cultural City Centre can be physically interpreted and its boundaries defined.
Újbuda's city centre functions as a pedestrian-friendly – 15-minute – district.
Users regard the district as a cultural quarter.
A liveable city quarter has emerged, thanks to cultural services and pedestrian-friendly developments.
